DVD to iMovie?

[hartley]hartley - 04:09am Aug 15, 2007 PST

We are in the process of porting Hi8 tapes to DVD using AV output to a DVD recorder. The camera we have has usb port, not firewire. These are home movies. Is there a way to port the DVD into iMovie to edit it and then write the edited version out to another DVD? Or is there another application that will do this? You're talking to a beginner here, so use simple words. Thanks. ... Charlie

You could use something like VisualHub to export the content to DV files
and then use them in iMovie.

<http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/>

Maybe you need Mactheripper to extract the DVD content first.

Handbrake is a very easy to use tool that will handle this job nicely.

Use MPEG Streamclip <http://www.squared5.com/> to convert the DVD to a DV
Stream (iMovie format) then open in iMovie, edit and send to iDVD to burn.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure they'll have to be in DV format. A program such as DVDxDV,
and I think MPEGstreamclip, will do that. I think with the latter you have
to be careful to repair the timecode breaks that happen from some DVD
recorders.

When you do the editing in iMovie, then you can send that output to iDVD to
author new DVDs.

Quicktime Pro will also export to DV files which can then be edited in
iMovie or Final Cut...

Not cheap, but Canopus ADVC works like a charm. I use it to transfer VHF
tapes into iMovie as well as regular TV. By routing TiVo through my VCR, I
can capture TiVo as well.

The easiest way to work with hi8 tapes is to use a Digital8 camcorder as the source deck. You should be able to go directly into iMovie through firewire. If you need timecode, you'll have to make DV dubs. We keep a 10 year old digital8 camcorder around for just this purpose.

Re: DVD to iMovie?

We have a Sony video Hi8 model CCD-TRV608 that has a usb out port, but no firewire. None of the new digitals that interest me to buy have a firewire out port. Presently we are able to port the movies to DVD using a Toshiba DVD video recorder, model D-RW2SU. My problem is that the editing features are rudimentary. That is why I would like to be able to take the DVD's created by the recorder and re-edit them on the computer.

Sony does not use the Firewire name, it calls it 'i.Link" and it is
present on all digital Sony camcorders. However, your TRV608 is an
analog Hi8. The good news is that you can play back your analog Hi8
on a digital 8mm player, which would give you full iMovie features.

You can also get something like the Dazzle Hollywood Bridge which
will allow you to connect any composite or s-video source to a
firewire port. You might be able to find one of these on fleabay,
even, for not much money.

Here's one (not a recommendation, just one I found in 2.5seconds of
searching)

Bridge_W0QQitemZ130145635507QQihZ003QQcategoryZ3759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrd

In fact, that's exactly what I did once upon a time when I had a
analog hi8 recorder. My mom insisted we replace it with a digital
one though as it weighed about half as much and she was able to use
it for much longer stretches of time.
