Palm Software ggrainger (apparently) - 02:32am Jul 25, 2007 PSTvia emailI have an old Treo 90, that I want to use on a laptop. My software is
OS9, on the CD, and when I try to download it from Palm, it tells me
that my serial number isn't valid. The left side of the barcode and
serial number has worn off, from synching on two different computers.
I am assuming that I am missing the first few digits from the serial
number. I tried copying the software, but that didn't work. When I go
to the Palm site, buying the software doesn't seem to be an option.
Does anyone have any advice? The laptop is running 10.4.10.
Thanks,
Gail

On the Palm, go to the application menu, and select the Info menu.
The serial number is under the "Version" section.

It's been a while since I found this and used it so my memory is rusty. Mark/Space sells a package to allow syncing between Apple applications and Palms. To deal with the issue of older software they have (or did have) a link in their support site to a Palm model that would let you download current software without a serial number. You might have to dig around a bit but it was there at one point in time.

Before seriously considering Mark/Space's "Missing Sync for Palm OS",
I strongly suggest that you go to their Forum < http://
forums.markspace.com/> and read about all of the problems people are
having with it.
I purchased Version 5 some time ago and have since quit using it
entirely (gone back to Palm Desktop / HotSync) because of multiple
unaddressed problems. According to the Forum, people's experiences
with the new Version 6 are even worse. And there seems to be no
response from the Mark/Space folks, other than to issue a 6.0.1 beta
which only (apparently) fixes two or three of the less problematic
issues.
YMMV,

I WAS NOT suggesting they get MarkSpace. I was just trying to say that MS has LINK to a Palm model that doesn't require a serial number to get the current Palm software.

Since Palm is no longer directly supporting the Mac OS, (no more Palm
Desktop updates), you've either Mark Space, PocketMac, or eSync. I've seen some issues
with Missing Sync here and there, but once I started using Sync Services
instead of app-specific conduits, a lot of the problems went away. It is
however, very easy to get yourself into trouble with Missing Sync, or any
other sync software. Most of that is usually due to PEBKAC

Re: Palm Software
I have a Palm m515. It is surely time to get a new PDA, but what? I cannot afford iPhone nor do I wish to resubscribe to AT&T having left them for Verizon 2 years ago. What is a good PDA compatible with my Macs?

I've used many of Palm's "latest" PDAs, including the T|X which is the
current flagship (my girlfriend has one, while I've recently switched from a
Tungsten E to a T3). Seeing how old your Palm is, choosing this one (TX)
would be a significant improvement, especially thanks to the display which
has more than twice the pixels and resolution (320x480 vs 160x160) in the
same form factor < http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/index.html>.
Much more memory too, of course, and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.
A lower price option would be the E2 (320x320)
The main problem with Palm is that their handhelds haven't been updated for
nearly two years now. Clearly their business is now their Treo smartphones.
I won't comment on them since I've never used them, and don't plan to for
now.
Another alternative would be the Windows Mobile platform. But I've used one
of the high end PDAs a few months ago, and was really not impressed (except
by the slowness). Here too my understanding is that smartphones are the main
products now, anyways.

Re: Palm Software
Try Missing Sync 6 (which is currently available, but I only have experience with version 5.x) with the m515.
If you're happy with it, i.e. it's stable, syncs, and you can live with the limitations (e.g. does not sync categories, may not sync all the address book details etc), then you should be happy with the Palm line. I have a Treo 680 because I rely on some 3rd party Palm software: I tolerate the deficiencies, and admire the stability/Mac-ness of Missing Sync, but am overall sad about the decline of Palm. I haven't run into the problems that the posters on Macupdate/VT/Mark Space forums seem to have (shrug).
Based on my experience with Missing Sync for Palm, I'm not averse to trying a Win Mobile device if I had the opportunity.
My wife just got a Nokia E65, and I'm surprised as to how usable as a PDA it is. Nokia provides iSync support, which works very well for Address Book and iCal syncing. There's also 3rd party support (e.g. Opera browser, unit converter that sort of thing). There's no touch screen support, so things like taking text notes etc is impractical IMHO. But for her needs, it's a step up from a standalone, non-syncing phone.
The E65 is a Symbian 60 phone, and there probably is a range of Nokia phones based on that OS. I haven't used other brands recently, but would not be surprised if Nokia's usual competitors (Sony Ericsson, Moto) had similar PDA-like syncing functions.
Finally, the basic iPod has read-only Address Book, iCal, text notes sync support.
