Multiple mailboxes on the iPhone samack - 08:21am Jul 24, 2007 PSTIs it possible to add additional mailboxes on the iPhone? I would like to have a folder to keep emails that I may need later so I will not accidently delete them. Thanks, Sandy

You can have many email accounts on the iPhone. You can also set up an account, then turn it off (in the Settings module) without deleting it. This lets you turn it on at a later time for use. It can handle .Mac, AOL, Gmail, Yahoo, basic pop, imap and exchange). When an account is turned off, it does not show up when you are checking your email, but can be activated with the Settings. I have heard of problems if you have duplicate accounts on the iPhone (both accounts for the same email account).

You can have as many folders as you want but as far as I can tell,
you cannot create them on the iPhone. For my IMAP accounts, I had to
create the folders in OSX Mail and then they show up on the iPhone
and I can file mail into them. For POP accounts I have not found a
way to create folders.

Note that for the Courier IMAP server (at least ours) you have to
tell the iPhone that the "IMAP Path Prefix" is INBOX
(Just as with Mail.app). It shouldn't be necessary in either case,
as the IMAP protocol has a command allowing the client to discover
that tidbit of information. I've been told (I haven't bothered
watching with a packet sniffer) that Mail actually asks the question,
gets the answer, then seemingly ignores it. If one syncs an account
that already has that set in Mail.app the setting comes across in the
sync, so I initially missed the need.

How do you tell the iphone that the "IMAP Path Prefix" is INBOX? Would that function be found under settings?
Thanks, Sandy

What?
I have a courier/mysql setup and I've never told Mail that the prefix
is INBOX. Is this why the mailboxes show up under the INBOX instead
of a separate account 'folder' like other IMAP accounts?

Well, to answer my own question, yes, this is why. And to answer
Sandy's question, the setting is in the account prefs under the
advanced tab.

Settings-->Mail-->(the account)-->Advanced. Scroll to the bottom,
and fill in IMAP Path Prefix. Note that "INBOX" needs to be all caps.
Note that I have no experience using iPhone with any server other
than Courier, and IMAP servers differ in what the path prefix is
(which is why there is a command in the protocol to discover it).

It's not necessary to tell Mail.app (on Macs) about the INBOX prefix
unless you want to be successful at storing one or more of Trash,
Drafts, or sent mail on the server rather than the Mac.
It's also possible, of course, that we have different Courier
versions...the above refers to the version I have access to.

Under the advanced tab there is something called Account Directory with a input window but it is grayed out... must be because I have a pop account...

We were pretty clear in talking about IMAP early in the thread. It
did sort of fade away. We've been talking about folders on the
server--clever as Steve Dorner's (and friends') POP3 was, it doesn't
do that.
(I only operate one POP account, served by the cable company--not any
of the big names--that I have my cable connection with. They only do
POP (even after recently outsourcing to what seems to be a competent
mail provider). I don't use their mail for anything significant.)
I haven't done a POP setup on the iPhone.
