Nisus Writer Pro 1.0

[shane700]shane700 - 02:50am Jul 20, 2007 PST

The product seems to function fairly well except for graphics. To say that it is like Nisus Writer 6.5 is not true. The positioning of a graphic object is very poor. Objects are sometimes constrained to a column and it is not possible to size it outside of the column. Other times it works OK. Trying to size an object is difficult and occasionally you have to drag the handle in the opposite direction to what one would expect. There are no drawing tools. I need text boxes, rectangles and occasionally ovals. These are all in the old 6.5 together with color and pattern selection (also missing). I did manage to reproduce the last issue of a Journal I edit after 7 hours work! But I am not ready to do it on a regular basis with version 1.0. Finally, there are still errors in the product, on which I have already submitted feedback to Nisus during beta testing. Regards, Shane.

[I did not intend to give the impression that Nisus Writer Pro is like Nisus Writer 6.5. However, it finally adds a lot of features that have never before appeared in a native Mac OS X version, which is a big step in the right direction. I've been using NWP 1.0 quite a bit lately, and although there's certainly a lot to like, I'm also missing a number of features beyond those dealing with graphics. We'll cover all this in some detail in TidBITS when we post a full review. -Joe]

Re: Nisus Writer Pro 1.0

I am running JMP 4, a stat pak, under OS9 and when I try to get figures over into OSX Nisus Express via RTF, it converts them to a PDF, apparently. Sometime the results are good, other times not. The native format seems to be PICT. I can export as RTF, HTML (figs convert to dot maps), or the JMP native 'Journal' format, which isn't readable by anything else, apparantly. (Can also print PDFs using a shareware chooser driver).

It really gets problematic if I need to change something in the figure. For some reason, I can only ungroup in AppleWorks, not Pages (which also seriously mangles the tables associated with the figures). Then, the text going vertical is converted into bit maps, while the hor. text is converted to scalable text. Not good, if you need to resize.

Is there any 'safe' way to get these figures into Nisus?
