New Safari Features David Weintraub (apparently) - 07:45am Jul 19, 2007 PSTvia emailI've been using the new Safari for Windows, and noticed some rather
nice features. I suspect that we'll see these features in the next
version of Safari on the Mac:
* Find has been "Firefoxed". When you do a find on the page, like
FireFox, a search criteria box appears on the browser and not a
separate window (on the top though). There are two arrows next to the
box which let you search back and forth through the document. Very
much like FireFox. HOWEVER, when you do a search, the whole document
is grayed out except for your search term. And, the current search
term has a red background.
* Tabs are now rearrangeable much like in FireFox. However, you can
also drag a tab off of your Safari browser window onto the desktop.
This opens a new window with that page in it. The neat thing is that
this is reversible. You can take a Safari browser window, and drag
that back to the tab bar on another Safari browser window, and that
page will now be a tab on the second browser window.
Anyone else notice anything new?

Yep, these features (and others) are also in Safari 3 beta for the Mac; Rob
G. covered the new features for us back in June:
Personally, the beta finally got me to switch back to Safari after a couple
years using Firefox and Camino.

Just to avoid confusion as some listas could get the idea that Apple
did something for the windoze crowd without doing at least the same
for the Mac crowd:
These features are the same for the Windows Public Beta of Safari as
for the Mac Safari 3.0 Public Beta which is freely downloadable from
http://www.apple.com/safari/. I don't use much else on my Mac, btw.
The new Find is brilliant!
In the History Menu, you will find two new options: "Reopen Last
Closed Window" and "Reopen All Windows From Last Session"[sic]. I
find them very handy if Safari should Crash or if I have to reboot
with tons of tabs/windows open.
Kind regards,
Kim

The Safari beta versions are in sync between the Windows and Mac OS X
versions, so if you like those features and don't mind the occasional
crash as well the odd hiccup in iChat (you'll sometimes have to hit
Return twice to send IMs), you can download Safari 3ß from the Apple
website.
Apart from the "Firefoxed" text search and the rearrangeable tabs,
Safari has a few other new features that are highly welcome.
There are more warnings (in the right places!), e.g., when you try to
quit the app while windows are open, or when clicking on the Close
button in a window with several tabs.
Two very useful new menu items are Reopen Last Closed Window and
Reopen All Windows From Last Session in the History menu.
My favorite, though, is that you can now resize text fields (of the
textarea kind) right there on the page. No more reason to despair
when trying to type a full paragraph where the website's designer
only expected a word, or two. Just drag the resize widget at the
bottom right corner of the text field.
There are probably other additions, but these are the ones I already
use regularly.

Re: New Safari Features
Unfortunately for me, I have bought two pieces of software that have a built-in registration that was NOT compatible with Safari 3.x Beta. I had to go back to 2.x to do the registrations and that was a pain. I am waiting until the completed version of Safari 3 is completed before I will use it. :-(

This 'feature' is really annoying when it stops the computer from
shutting down - I can see the point if there are many windows open
and you try to shut down the app., but not when you close a window
with several tabs open - so I turned it off.

Re: New Safari Features
One other nice feature of the new Beta version of Safari is that it gives you all the bells and whistles that go with Gmail, if you're using that. In the past, I've had to switch to Netscape or Firefox just to access Gmail on my home computer; and though able to access Gmail via Safari with my office computer, I've been limited to plain text -- so again, I use Firefox or Netscape. Now (having installed the beta version) with the home computer (haven't had a chance to install it at the office) I can access Gmail and I use all the options, including color and ambient color (whatever that's called). Thanks to the gentleman who recommended it on this board.

I use Safari on occasion, but until there is something like
AdBlockPLus I won't be using anything but Firefox as my main browser.
Everytime I use Safari I am simply stunned at the amount of flashing
moving animated annoying ad banners that appear on nearly every page.
Ugh!

When Safari doesn't work, I always first try Firefox, then Omniweb,
then iCab, then Opera, and if that also fails, Internet exploder. In
that order.
Best,

Re: New Safari Features
I like the new Find feature, but I've had Safari hang, then crash when trying to open a link to a pdf.
Any solutions?

Um, you accidentally click the close box on the wrong Safari window, which
has multiple tabs for a long-running project, then swear a lot as you try to
remember which pages they were all pointing at? Or does "reopen last closed
window" solve that problem? If it also restores all open tabs then that
warning isn't really necessary for experienced users.
(Note that I'm not running Safari 3 --- I tried it briefly at home and it
exploded very messily. Cue uninstall.)

One of the things I do miss with the new Beta is that Pithhelmet
< http://www.culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php> no longer
works.

Re: New Safari Features
I try to use Safari on a PC at work. I like it, except it is unable to access our company Intranet. Instead, it asks for the proxy server password, because there is no place to enter exception addresses as there is in IE. In fact the Proxy Settings button in the Advanced preferences is grayed out, so it appears to use the IE settings, but misses that IE setting with the exception addresses and exclusion of the proxy server for local addresses.

Re: New Safari Features
Looking in the Apple discussions, I found there is a fix for Safari 3 crashing or stalling when opening .pdf's. That fix is discussed in a macosxhints thread: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070622185034973< Basically you trash the adobepdfviewer.plugin. That disables using Adobe Viewer but allows you to see the PDF's in Safari. Steve

Re: New Safari Features
Do the various people reporting failures with the B-E-T-A version of
Safari not understand that beta means not ready for regular use, "not
ready for prime time", has known and unknown bugs, may crash when you
visit any web site (and maybe even when you're not), and you especially
don't want to be doing a financial transaction with a beta product.
Beta means you are the one doing the company's testing and, like a test
pilot for an aircraft, you may crash and burn.
