CD not recognized after ITunes runs?

First -- yes! I have googled the heck out of this question. If I've missed something, I've given it a good go.

Running older PowerBook G4, never had any problems. Updates run as they are fed to me ... currently OS X 10.4.10, ITunes 7.3.1, etc. Firmware is latest for this older PowerBook (4.2.9f1). Internal CD RW/DVD reader as originally installed. No history of problems.

I don't put music CD's in very often. But recently, have found that If I run ITunes, and try to access a music CD, the internal CD player is no longer recognized.

DVD's work fine. Load and Play fine with DVD player utility.

Cd's which are put in and mounted on desktop, but not running ITunes, can be browsed, files can be copied to HD. Everything seems fine. But running ITunes, and trying to rip or play a track directly from the internal CD reader ... hangs ITunes. Must force quit.

Cd's which are accessed from an external device, either firewire or USB drives, no problem in ITunes. It's only the internal (original) CD reader which is hanging up.

If I reboot, everything is back to square one. CD's and DVD's are recognized again.

Is there some firmware update I don't know about? Is there a problem with later versions of ITunes and older PoerBooks?

Is this an old, boring problem that has been discussed to death, but i just can't figure out how to find the thread?

Have you tried playing the songs via the preview in the Finder? If
that works, the hardware side of things should be OK, as well as your
QuickTime installation (since sound file previews are played through
QT).

In which case I'd suggest re-installing iTunes from the stand-alone
installer (vs. via Software Update). If that doesn't solve it, do the
same with Mac OS X 10.4 Combo Updater and, if that also doesn't help,
with QuickTime, just to be sure.

Let us know whether this helps.

Regards,

Jochen.

Re: CD not recognized after ITunes runs?

I have had same problem on titanium powerbook. I did try reinstalling itunes from scratch and 10.4.? from combo updater, no joy. Did not do clean system install for this but had done one at some point before . Let me know if you find solution.
