Re: Recent Mac OS X updates causing G5 fan problems
The thing to test whether the system updates are at fault would be to downgrade to 10.4.8 and see if the problem exists. It could be that your power supply is failing or something else.

Re: Recent Mac OS X updates causing G5 fan problems
Hi Jess
We have a G5 which was upgraded to 10.4.9 and the fan was constantly running full blast. Eventually I found this link which fixed it. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300351 Although the symptom here is the air deflector door, doing what they said re set the fan. Good luck

Re: Recent Mac OS X updates causing G5 fan problems
When I got my G5 quad in 2006 I immediately noticed that it sounded like a
747 was about to take off. The local reseller I bought it from went over
all the fans and electrical requirements but ultimately they needed to
replace the motherboard. Something in there was causing the fans to turn at
full blast. To this day, from time to time I need to shut down because the
fans just spin up for no reason (at least no real CPU load or anything). A
restart won't do it, I need to shut down for a minute then boot up - and
poof! Fans back to normal. It's been that way since the original system
software version 10.4.3 I think. Now at 10.4.8 all updates done via combo
standalone downloads.

I also got my G5 Quad in 2006.
I'd heard about its fan noise but it has not been too bad so far.
My room temperature during the summer is in the low 80's. The fan kicks in every once in a while but it's at the tolerable level. The G4 I used to have was much louder.
I had my room up to 88 degrees the other night and the fan ran continuously at a slightly louder level. But it still was not going at full blast. (Thank God!)

Mine only does it when you boot in single user mode, which sort of makes
sense --- it probably hasn't loaded all the temperature management software,
so it just punts and turns the fans on full. However, it does stick that way
after rebooting from single user mode. The solution is to turn it off *at
the wall* (just shutting down isn't enough) for about 15--20 seconds, which
I think resets the power manager circuitry, and probably also other things.

Whoops, I only just noticed you guys are talking abut G5 quads. Mine is a
single, so no wonder I don't have fan problems. It does sound like a vacuum
cleaner on full blast when it revs up though. Enough to keep small children
away from the intakes :)
Must pay more attention. I wasn't even using a cell phone while typing! ;)
I just turned 40, I'll blame it on that :)

Restart and press CMD-S to get to the UNIX prompt. At the prompt type exit
and hit enter. Fans should pretty much stop winding up. They will still do
so on occasion but not incessantly.

Do they have different numbers of fans? A quad has what?, like 6 or 8 fans?
I haven't been inside since it was fixed so I don't recall. I would think
that the dual machines (or any similar enclosure) would have the same number
of fans, albeit they wouldn't have to work as hard.
> Enough to keep small children away from the intakes :)
Very true! I work in textiles where we get a lot of lint from the yarn and
I probably stupidly keep the G5 on the floor - but it's remarkably clean
inside - just vacuum the front "grill" from time to time!

Yes, fewer processors = less heat :) I certainly never hear the fans on
this one in normal operation.

Mine is a single G5 1.8 with all the problems.

Re: Recent Mac OS X updates causing G5 fan problems
Hey, that's funny, I just noticed today that when my machine wakes up from
sleep, two of the fans briefly spin up in sequence (presumably
self-testing), which sounds like the computer is going "oooh... aaahh..." :)

Re: Recent Mac OS X updates causing G5 fan problems
I've had the same problems on 10.4.10 my g5 dual core 2.3 - I think it was driven by unexplained CPU activity - drove me crazy until i downgraded to 10.4.6, stepped up again to 10.4.8; am still good.
What is frustrating however, is I need to run safari 3 [needs 10.4.10] for web design work, and so am hoping there is a fix for this soon - unfortunately I have found very little discussion or info online about this - [this is about as good as it has gotten actually] as far as the 10.4.10 issue is concerned..
So if anyone has any news on this - please post it.
Cheers.

No one NEEDS to run a beta browser, and Safari 3 under OS 10.4.x
will, I suspect, never be final as the Safari 3 browser will be part
of Leopard.

Have you tried starting up with CMD-S, typing exit at the prompt. This will
usually halt any fan revving.
