Updaters cause problems for Office and other Rosetta apps dianeofor (apparently) - 02:49am Jul 13, 2007 PSTvia email - MS MVPAfter installing iTunes 7.3.1 and Quicktime 7.2 Updater, at least some
Rosetta Applications no longer work. Office for Mac 2004 runs under Rosetta.
It's not just MS software, but all programs requiring CFM. The Dock Icons
bounce once or twice and then nothing happens.
See the Entourage Help Blog for help dealing with problems after updating
iTunes 7.3.1 and Quicktime 7.2.

If you have not applied the updaters, I suggest waiting for a fix from
Apple.

Re: Updaters cause problems for Office and other Rosetta apps
I did the same updates, and discovered much to my chagrin, I could no
longer 'cut and paste' to Office: Mac 2004'
I could cut and paste to Apple mail. Phoned Microsoft and the young
lady, at my age all ladies are young, was aware of this problem, the
second one she has received in the last 24 hours and a few other
staff members had received this same complaint.
From here on, sadly I can not give details as she walked me through
the procedure to restore 'cut and paste' the culprit seemed to be
iTunes. It was extremely nice up here to receive assistance from a
call in centre in Canada, that knew what a Mac was, and not end up in
New Delhi who never knew that Mac had a programme 'Apple Mail' , let
alone that there was a computer made from Apple. This by the way was
my ISP help desk. Give them credit a supervisor called me from there,
was I happy with the service received?"
Just threw this in to validate 'Diane Ross' email

FWIW, I installed the updates and have no trouble launching/using MS
Office or other Rosetta apps.

A little birdie tells me that the culprit is the Java 6 beta.
Uninstall that, and you're golden.

The problem seems to happen to those who have installed the Apple
beta of what they call Java 6.0 (differs from Sun's numbering by a
rather large multiplier).
Somewhere in the Apple forums is a recipe for getting rid of Java 6.0
beta (it's a bunch of work in Terminal, but for most of those who go
around joining the Developer program and downloading betas onto
mainline machines, it's probably better than reinstalling 10.4 and
updating to 10.4.10 again (which was the first solution posted).

Installed updates, no Java 6, no problem, so my experience supports that
theory.

Not sure why everyone is complaining, it makes your mac act like an iPhone!

I don't think that is correct since, I didn't have the beta of Java
installed and still couldn't get the apps running. From what I read
on macfixit, it seems to have been more of an issue with the
prebindings or something like that.

One of the commenters left these instructions on the Entourage Help Blog:
The method for removal, identified by poster bigman13 on Apple's Discussion
boards, adapted as follows:
Login as an administrator
Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities)
Type cd /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg/Contents and press return
Type lsbom -s -f Archive.bom > /tmp/files and press return (this will create
a file in the /tmp directory named files that lists all of the contents of
JavaSE6Release1.pkg)
Using your favorite text editor, open the file /tmp/files. Typing open
/tmp/files then pressing return will open the file with TextEdit, by
default. If you were using BBEdit, you could type BBedit open /tmp/files.
Replace all blank spaces, " " (type one space in the "find" field), with
(type a single backslash with a single space after it in the replace field)
and all entries of "./" with "rm /". If you opened the file in TextEdit,
choose "Find" from the "Edit" menu, and make these replacements. Essentially
you are generating a command list that will delete all the files installed
by JavaSE6Release1.pkg.
Back in the Terminal, type sudo bash /tmp/files and press return
Next type rm -r /Library/receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg and press return.
Finally, update prebinding by typing sudo update_prebinding. When prompted
for a password, enter your admin password, and press Return again. The
process may take a few minutes, and you may see various messages flash by.
The process is complete when the Terminal returns to a normal prompt. Do not
perform any other operations while the update prebinding process is taking
place.
If none of the fixes fix the issue best thing to do is a archive install of
the OS, just do not do the latest Apple Update after this.

I don't have the beta either but after updating to ITunes 7.3.1 and Quicktime 7.2 I can't launch any Office 2004 apps.
So yeah there is a problem.

I've updated several generations of Mac G5s, a few iMac G5s, an Intel MacBook and MacPro and all are using Office 2004 with the patch from the last week. If it's not working, I'm not being told.

Re: Updaters cause problems for Office and other Rosetta apps
I also had the problem without having Jave 6.0 Beta installed.
I reinstalled Quicktime 7.1.6 via Pacifist and rebuilt my prebindings which seemed to clear up my issue with Office. I also applied the 10.4.10 Combo Updater just to be safe. I'm currently ignoring Software Update request to update Quicktime ;-)
