iPhone and DUNS?

Does anybody know if it's possible for an iPhone to act as a modem
for a laptop?

I've got a Treo 650 which provides Internet access for my MBP via
"DUNS" (DialUp Network Something?) using a Bluetooth connection.
There are some minor problems (phone tends to crash occasionally,
unexpected disconnects every now and then), but it's a great way to
check email, etc, without having to pay for WiFi access in random
spots.

If there was a way to do something like that with an iPhone, I'd
convert in a flash. It's the last missing piece as far as I can tell.

Pogue's review says No.

In a word, no. It does not function as a modem, neither tethered nor via Bluetooth. As a matter of fact Bluetooth only works with headsets, no sync via Bluetooth nor integration into your car system. That however, may change but I rather doubt the modem use will soon.

I don't have an iPhone to try this with myself, so I can't confirm
it's true, but I learned yesterday that the iPhone does NOT provide
that dialup service. As far as I can tell, that's true via USB and
Bluetooth.

I imagine it's a feature they could add in software, since physically
the phone is capable of doing Bluetooth and connecting to the
Internet. I agree, this is such an important part of how I currently
use my cell phone (not daily, but pretty much every time I travel)
that it's an omission that really gives me pause.

Further, the Bluetooth implementation on iPhone doesn't allow you to
sync your contacts via iSync! Obviously Apple intends you to connect
your phone and computer via USB and iTunes, but I just can't imagine
leaving their own phone out of the long list of supported models in
iSync.
