Losing the color palette

[andrew.kaizen]andrew.kaizen - 05:10am Jun 12, 2007 PST

I hope you guys can help. From time to time I lose the information contained in the color palette that's accessible in most apps. I may have nine or ten colors stored in the swatches and then, bang, they are all gone. Probably because I have so many tweaks and add ons running in the background.

Is there a file somewhere that I can back up, and then drop back into place to restore this information next time I lose it?

Many thanks, Andrew Burke <http://www.andrewburke.orcon.net.nz/mac/index.htm>

You may find this article useful:

It looks like you need to back up ~/Library/Colors

And more specifically, ~/Library/Colors/NSColorPanelSwatches.plist

This is implied by making changes to the color palatte while running
the following command in Terminal:

     $ sudo fs_usage | grep -i plist

See `man fs_usage` for more details.

Re: Losing the color palette

Hi Andrew,

This may seem to be a long way around the problem you mention, but it works
for me, especially when I am working on several projects at once, each of
which has its own batch of particular colours (pardon the non-American
spelling! :-) ).

I open a special Photoshop file and I simply paint little swatches of colour
on them. Each project has its own line of colours, appropriately labelled.
The swatches can be pretty small, just large enough to find with the eye
dropper tool. This swatch file is tiny so you can keep it open all the time
while you work on your projects, and just access it whenever you need too.
The file is always on my desktop so I can find it quickly when needed.

As I said, it sounds cumbersome, but once you have set it up, the system
works well. If you back it up on another drive, you should always have it
ready to use.

Paul
