Mac OS 8.6 and 10.3.4 co-existing

[Genet, Jamie Kahn]Jamie Kahn Genet (apparently) - 09:33am Jul 2, 2004 PST

Hi there.

Can anyone tell me if there are any issues I ought to be aware of having
an 8.6 system folder in the same partition as my 10.3.4 system?

I've tried installing 8.6 to a separate partition but it won't boot from
that :-( No idea why, but I know it will boot from the first partition
I've got 9 and X installed to. I currently have 9.2.2 but it breaks
several older applications I want to use and I don't care about not
being able to run classic in X.

So I want to scrap 9 and replace it with 8.6. But should I keep 9's Disk
First Aid utility? Would 8.6's First Aid screw parts of X (I've no idea,
but I'm worried if 8.6 crashes and runs it's disk utility automatically
after restating will it cause problems? The partition is Journaled if
that makes any difference.

Regards,
 Jamie Kahn Genet

You need to keep the OS 9 "Startup Disk" control panel (the most
recent version that you can find). This will ensure that you can
switch between OS 8.6 & OS X.

If you are going to run Disk First Aid in OS 8.6, I would keep OS 9's
Disk First Aid and use that one. I don't know for sure that the OS
8.6 version would cause problems, but better safe than sorry (there's
no reason not to use the OS 9 version).

As far as the disk utility running automatically on startup, go to
the "General Controls" control panel and un-tick the box marked
"Check disk if computer was shut down improperly." Actually, I seem
to remember that in 8.x this option was labelled something like "Warn
me if the computer was shut down improperly." (I only have OS 9
around, so can't check the exact working). In any case, make sure
that the box next to this option is not ticked.

Hope that helps (and maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can
fill in the details on whether it's safe to use Disk First Aid).

Cheers,
Jolin

Righto. Startup Disk CP and Apple First Aid. Anything else I ought to
keep from 9?

Yeah, that makes good sense, I'll do that. Thanks.

So has anyone actually done what I'm planning? Did 8.6 happily co-exist
with 10.3.4? I recall reading early X beta Apple info that you could use
either 8.6 _or_ 9.X as the classic environment. Was this in fact the
case? I'm assuming 8.6 support was later dropped with a later revision
(which one - anyone know?). The upshot of all this is I'm hoping it
means 8.6 will play nicely installed on a X partition (but _not_ used
for classic) without trashing my X install or the disk in general.

Can anyone verify this? This is not to say I won't take a risk or two,
I'm just a bit sick of installing software and dealing with backups
right now. June was an 'interesting' month for me, but I could do with a
little less adventure right now. Oh, forget I said that. The hell with
it! What kind of a geek am I if I fear re-installing and configuring two
or three systems. I'm ashamed of myself...

Provided you don't have another "Classic" system folder on that same
partition, you should have no problems at all. As far as Disk First Aid
goes, I'd use Disk Utility in X to handle that sort of thing, as it
will be up to date with the latest HD drivers.

That's reassuring. So assuming I don't use any low level classic
utilities everything should be ok - that seems to be the verdict :-)
Whew! Mac OS 9 is really pissing me off. Even Civilisation II doesn't
respond the same (minor screen flicker as view moves - annoying and
distracting), let alone more serious troubles.
