But why does it work backwards!?

It would be more logical if scrolling down would advance the playhead
and vice versa!

That's kind of funny, because I find the opposite much more logical. Scroll
up = away from me = forwards. Scroll down = towards me = backwards. Makes
perfect sense :)

Uhm, Nigel, could that be because you're on the bottom side of the
globe? (as seen from Old Europe)?

;-)

Cheers, Tom

And the zooming thing seems backwards (but still very useful). Push
away to get closer; pull to get farther away.

This reminds me of a conceptual quibble I had with some version of
Emacs years ago. I had to reverse the bindings of the "up" and "down"
commands: Apparently the Emacs author thought of "down" as "holding
the viewport stationary, move the document down", i.e. show me text
nearer the start of the document. This seemed backwards to my mind,
which thought of "down" as "holding the document stationary, move the
viewport down", i.e. show me text nearer the end of the document.

Another one I've run into with some people: Given that today is
Wednesday, is "next Thursday" tomorrow or 8 days from today? What if
today were Sunday instead of Wednesday?

Cheers!

I'm with Matti on this. Scrolling down = advancing in a document = moving playhead forwad. Scrolling up = going backwards in a document.

Obviously there's no right and wrong in this. Luckily USB Overdrive can customize these settings per application so scrolling up can mean scroll down and vice versa for a certain app.
