Backwards from DVD to iMovie?

[simbrowne0]simbrowne0 - 10:10am May 20, 2007 PST
Simon

Once upon a time I took some home movies on Super 8. More recently they were transferred to tape (which I don’t have) and thence, via Final Cut and/or iMovie, to some DVDs. The quality is dreadful as are the colors and what I’d dearly love to do is cut out the bad stuff and attempt some color correction.

To do so, I want to move the video back from the DVD-Rs onto my G5 iMac and into iMovie6. Is this possible without software like MacTheRipper? (Seems to me, no ripping would be going on -- just putting the toothpaste back in the tube -- but I don’t seem able to do that). What’s the best way to go?

I suggest using MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD Video_TS folder into a format that iMovie will work with (for example Mini DV). You can go to other formats but miniDV edits more smoothly than MPEG-2.

Of course you will get much better results going back to the original source material and redigitizing it. Use a high quality VCR, make sure the heads are clean, adjust the tracking if necessary.
