Video conferencing with PCs

I'm looking for video conferencing solutions that inter-operate
reasonably well between PCs and Macs. An optimal solution would
include a set of PC hardware and software which can video conference
with a Mac, on a Jabber instant messaging system.

So far, I know that the following can do video:
Skype
AIM 5.5 and above (iChat on the Mac side)
Yahoo! Messenger

Apparently Trillian Pro (the Windows instant messaging client) can do
video with the AIM and Yahoo networks, and with iChat... but it's not
clear if it can do video with iChat with Jabber.

Has anyone puzzled through this wicket?

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes - but the great solution was not cheap, but it did work. You
could host a 3/4 people video conference at the far end of a 512/256K
ADSl link. For production we were hosted in a very well connected
suite in London Docklands, with participants all over Europe on a
variety of connections from ADSL to inside a data centre. Does IM &
Whiteboarding as well as audio & video.

Having written all of that I see Google has just bought the company -
I imagine it will still continue to work but the pricing might drop!

Try Horizon Wimba. We use it at this university for tutorials with
remote students. It's a bit primitive but works well with both
platforms. There's also a new Tandberg product about to come out that
looks pretty good. There's a demo on their website.

There's also a product called Lectopia produced by the University of
Western Australia. It might be a bit much for what you want but check
it out at lectopia.uwa.edu.au

Re: Video conferencing with PCs

Have you looked at Adobe Acrobat Connect? I don't know if it can handle what you need, but it is something fairly new for video conferencing.

Re: Video conferencing with PCs

Google didn't actually acquire Marratech as such, they licensed the software. See the update here:

<http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/04/collaborating-with-marratech.html>

In the first instance, this is for internal use only (per a Google product manager I spoke to this week), but I wouldn't be surprised to see this added to Google Talk down the line.

Cheers, Lars
