Moving Apple Mail Folder

[mc]mc (apparently) - 08:58am May 2, 2007 PST

If anyone can solve this problem, tidbits talk folk can!

I've moved Apple Mail folder to another partition and search (and
smart folders) no longer work after rebuild.

here's the deal:

i wanted to move apple mail folders Mail and Mail Downloads from
their current location in the library to a separate (and secure)
partition.

I've done this by using the terminal mv command and then making a
symbolic link (also in the terminal) so that the computer still
thinks Mail is in the Library

eg

lrwxr-xr-x 1 mc mc 20 Apr 24 00:48 Mail -> /Volumes/stuff/Mail

The problem is that search and smart folders no longer work. Apple
suggests rebuidling the mailbox if something doesn't show up in
search you know should.

I've rebuilt mailboxes, i've deleted the envelop index file, the
individual info.plist files for mailboxes. Nothing's worked.

Any experience here? any suggestions for help, very much appreciated.

with thanks, mc
.

Re: Moving Apple Mail Folder

There was a discussion on just this topic about a year ago TidBITS Talk:

<http://emperor.tidbits.com/TidBITS/Talk/870/>

I think the gist of it is that you need to tell spotlight to search
your encrypted volume as well, and perhaps reindex your mail. The
detailed procedure can be found here:

<http://www.macintouch.com/tigerreview/spotlight.html>

Once you have done this, you might also want to move the spotlight
cache out of

~/Library/Caches/Mail

To the encrypted volume and create a symbolic link back to the
original location.

Hope this helps.

Re: Moving Apple Mail Folder

Just a stab in the dark: try deleting and recreating the smart folder
(s).
