Airport Extreme N Firmware 7.1 Update

The update apparently does more that is discussed in the release
notes. It apparently made some changes in the handling of VPN
connections. There is some discussion of this in the Apple support
forums. In my own case, a Cisco VPN connection from a Windows machine
that previously worked well using the old Extreme router, failed with
the Extreme N router. Specifically, while it successfully connected
with the Extreme N router, no other machines connected through the
router could use DNS while VPN was active. I installed the firmware
and the problem went away; the VPN machine and the non-VPN machines
can co-exist.

Re: Airport Extreme N Firmware 7.1 Update

I also got some undocumented improvements.

Since I installed my Airport Extreme N, replacing an Airport Extreme
(g), I'd been limping along with no VPN or peer to peer connections
on my home network. Internet access worked fine from all computers.
As soon as the Airport restarted after the firmware upgrade, I ran
Chicken of the Sea and could see each computer on the network. I
clicked the Network link in the finder and can mount volumes from any
computer. Yea!

My shared hard drive may be working more reliably now as well.

Now if I can just get my HP2600n color laser printer to print from
any computer. My Ethernet connected iMac prints to it fine, but those
connected wireless see it listed in the Bonjour Printers pull down
but only get an error when chosen. I can print to my Lexmark Optra
E312L black and white laser printer from any computer.

Airport Extreme with Belkin USB hub, Maxtor 300GB drive, Lexmark and
HP laser printers
Intel iMac connected by Ethernet
Intel MBP and 2 G4 Macs connected by wireless

All run OS X 10.4.9

Re: Airport Extreme N Firmware 7.1 Update

Do you have to do this update over a wired connection? I've tried it
twice from my MBP connected via wireless and both times I get an
error "An error occurred while updating the base station
firmware" . . .despite being offered v7.1 by the utility.

Is it possible that you tried to update the original Airport Extreme
(mushroom shape)? I have the original, and got the identical error
message when I tried to update the firmware.

I ran the update wireless(ly) using my MBP. It went without a hitch.

Nope . . . I only have the one Airport. I've got wireless B/G on my
Netgear as well . . . but that's turned off. I'll try reapplying the
Airport Utility updater tonight . . . maybe that's part of it.

Re: Airport Extreme N Firmware 7.1 Update

Very strange . . . I tried it again last night with the latest version
of the Airport Utility from both my MBP wireless and my file server
(wired) and got the same error on both; even after rebooting the
Airport.

I'll try reinstalling the latest Airport software again . . .then
guess it will be time to search Apple's knowledge base . . .and will
also try it while logged in with an admin account over the wireless as
well, I was actually logged in with a non admin one, but that
shouldn't make any difference as it didn't ask me to authenticate from
either the MBP or the fileserver (which was logged in with an admin
account).

Re: Airport Extreme N Firmware 7.1 Update

To all those who received 'An error occurred while updating base station firmware':

Try to delete everything under ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware

Then run AirPort Utility

I successfully resolved the problem!

Very good. Did what you suggested and it worked!
