If I go to the New York Times site in Safari, click the RSS icon in
the address bar, and then click a link in the feed, I get something
like this:
<
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/nyregion/20casino.html?ex=1329627600&en=1088ed00bb331056&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss>
When I use Aaron's app, I get this:
<
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/nyregion/20casino.html?ex=1329627600&en=108aecf8bb331956&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss>
Although I can't tell with this particular link whether it will break
for a week or so, I'm pretty sure that the first version will and the
second version won't. They're quite different, with different en, ei,
and partner values, and in my testing while writing the article, the
ones that didn't use rssuserland didn't stay available.
Of course, it's entirely possible I just got confused among all the
different links that are advertised, but one way or another, the
Permalink feature that the New York Times advertises does not provide
a permanent free link. And more to the point, if you want to
reference an article you've seen, or you search for something and
find an New York Times article, you're going to have a very hard time
finding the URL supplied by the Times in their RSS feed. Aaron's app
exposes that, one way or another.
