The Grouch

My wife was just reminiscing about about The Grouch, the old
extension that would sing to you as you emptied the trash. ("I love
trash") (I believe that it also replaced the full trash can icon.)

So, I tried to look it up to see if there was anything equivalent for
OS X. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything. Any ideas out there?

In looking, I found a link to one of my all time favorite tidbits
articles: 300 Reasons the Mac is Great
<http://db.tidbits.com/article/1283>

I think that someone should redo the article, either come up with a
new list or annotate the old one with snarky commentary. Or both.

CTW sued.

However, the new Sounds4Fun has an event for emptying the trash, so
you could easily add Oscar's "I Love Trash" to your Mac and assign it
to that event. The animation is more difficult, but I think still
possible if you are willing to play with the .nib file for the Dock.app

If nothing else, the 'song' is on the soundtrack CD for Elmo in
Grouchland.

If you have the old extension on an old Macintosh, you can extract
the sound file and icon and create your own OS X version with:

iCan ($10)

Thanks for the note. Funny how the smallest project I ever worked on is the one everyone remembers. :-)

Sesame Street didn't actually sue me, but they threatened to.

Unfortunately it's hard for a company to understand the concept of giving away something for free.

One of these days maybe they'll let me resurrect it. I bug them about it every few years when I get bored.

Once you've converted the sound, make a copy, rename it "empty trash.aif", go to /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/Finder, make a copy of the existing "empty trash.aif" file, and replace the original with your converted sound file. OPTION-click the Dock's Finder icon, select Relaunch, and your replacement sound for emptying the trash should be active. Similarly, you can replace the "move to trash" sound, but you also have to replace the "drag to trash.aif" file inside the Dock folder.

OK. I've got it.

1) Find the sound. I got it from an mp3 of the whole song.
2) Download the demo of Rogue Amoeba's Fission crop it down to just
"I looooo-ooooove trash!"
3) Save the file.
4) Rename the file, "empty trash.aif"
5) Copy the file to the above listed location.

And my wife is happy! Woo-hoo!

Or load it into iTunes and trim it down to just "I Loooooo-oooove
trash!"

I found the old extension on my first CD backup (my entire system,
all thre drives, on one CD. Yes, one 650MB CD. And there was oodles
of room left over.

The trick appears how to get the sound out. I have both snd
resources saved as individual rsrc files, but how to get them into a
format I can then use?

ResEdit will allow you to easily extract the sound file and the icon
graphic.

Open the info on the file, set the start and end times, and then
convert the track.

I dunno what fission does, but trimming tracks is something that
iTunes just pretty well.

OK, I managed to extract the two snd files into usable version from
the original The Grouch extension. I will say that the sound quaility
is remarkably poor. What was perfectly acceptable in 1992 (or
whatever year it was) is no longer. I think the file is mono 8bit at
22kHz. It sounds like sandpaper on a vinyl record.

I used File Juicer <http://echoone.com/filejuicer/> which will
extract all the useful 'stuff' from resource using files and has a
generous demo period.

My biggest problem is that replacing the system sound involves
mucking about in the /System/ Folder, and I guess when it gets right
down to it, I am not willing to do that. /Libray? Sure, all the
time. But I leave /System to Apple.

iCan looks like a possibility, and I may do something like that as a
surprise to the kids at some point, but once I solved the resource
problem I realised I didn't actually WANT Oscar singing at me.

All is not wasted, however, along the way I found iVisualize <http://
web.mac.com/vogelbusch/iWeb/Site/iVisualize.html> and started mucking
about with Quartz Composer. Egads, that is sooooo cool. I can't
wait for Core Animation to come along in Leopard.

Hey Folks-

here is a link to The Grouch 2.5B3 (pre OS 9) for anyone that is interested... < http://www.pure-mac.com/friv.html#thegrouch>

I also stripped out the audio file which can be had here: <http://download.yousendit.com/FBDD05F10F7EF153> - this link is temporary, but should be up for a while :)

Cheers, trash lovers!

Can anyone give me a clue how to rename the existing 'empty trash.aif' file?

I changed its ownership from system to my own userid, but I still
cannot rename it or do anything else of that nature to it.

Thanks.
