Wired Ethernet alternative for MacBook

[gamcall]gamcall (apparently) - 09:51am Feb 9, 2007 PST

An acquaintance of mine had damaged the ethernet port of her
relatively new MacBook (well, she's been told she has). If so, can
anyone suggest alternatives/work-arounds to enable her to connect via
wired Ethernet? I've heard about USB-ethernet adaptors. Are these a
possibility?

Thanks,

GAM

Generally the USB-ethernet adaptors are PC only out of the box, but
there are third party drviers for them. The following page has
information on which adapters work. The page also allows you to
download the relevant drivers.

Pretty useful if you want to add an ethernet port to a Mini, for
example.

But, if the person is using a MacBook it is definitely less than a
year old, so why not just send it in to be repaired under warranty?

Thanks for that - very useful if she decides to go that route.

You mean beyond the one it already has, I take it...

Of course - but apparantly there is some contention about this.

Thanks for all replies.

A cheap wireless access point may help. Plug one end into the Ethernet port on the wall. And plug in a power cable.

An AirPort Express would work. But there are much cheaper 3rd party products that will do it. A spare Mac running Mac OS X (via Internet Sharing) could do it as well.
