iMac midnight awakening

[Via, Bill La]Bill La Via - 02:16pm Feb 5, 2007 PST

Just got a new iMac 24". Love it and it was long overdue replacing a 6 yr old G4 tower. Unfortunately, I've noticed a very annoying feature that I can't figure out how to stop. Neither could Apple Care folks.

Every night at midnight (even if asleep and muted) it chimes 12 times...my office happens to be right above my bedroom and it wakes me up. Aside from turning the machine off (which I prefer not to do for many reasons) I can't seem to come up with a solution. Any ideas will be welcomed.

[Chiming doesn't sound like standard behavior; check the Clock pane in the Date & Time preference pane. I'd look for something like iClock, though I'd be surprised if it could wake up the computer. -Adam]

Re: iMac midnight awakening

Don't have iClock installed on this machine though I may have had it in some iteration of my system over the last 6 years. I did use migration assistant to copy network settings, accounts, bookmarks, email database etc but I did clean install on all applications. maybe Bill Gates did it when I updated Office....;)

clock pane was unrevealing as was iCal preferences. I've scoured everything I can think of. I did come up with a workaround that allowed me to sleep last night. Instead of sleeping the muted machine, I just turned the volume down to an almost muted setting and put it to sleep. Either I was in a heavy coma, have become habituated to the sound or it worked. One of these nights, I'm gonna stay up to see what's happening. I've got 2 pre-school aged kids who wear me out and make it unlikely to be anytime soon...

Check System Preferences:Energy Saver, which can wake it up,
although if it's awake, it really does sound like some third-party
software.

What if you set the clock to 11:59pm during the day? Can you
tell what's happening? If you have earphones plugged in, does sound
come out through them and/or speakers?

Sound when muted is a very strange problem by itself,
distinct from attempting to bong at midnight.
