http://www.notmacchallenge.com/
Their objective is "to create a free replacement to dotMac's client-
based services that's easy enough for a first-time Mac user to
install and so fully and transparently integrated that a long-time
dotMac user wouldn't notice the difference"
This immediately reminded me of the "WindowsXP.onmac" project wich
was quickly followed by Apple's surprise called BootCamp beta.
Are we supposed to expect something new from Apple?
Who knows...
29$ per year dotMac subscription?
...free dotMac?
...a bunch of lawsuits? :-D

Re: notMac challenge
Perhaps this will cause Apple to put a reasonable price on .MAC. I don't even read reviews on software that costs over $100 so why would I consider "renting" something for a year at that high price? I personally think that Apple would increase sales of their hardware if they just bundled that in with the computer. They also should increase the amount of storage if they expect people to really use it. I have not even tried the free trial because it doesn't fit into my budget for that sort of thing. Pity, as I really like my Mac. I have not started the Dell for quite a while now.

Re: notMac challenge
An interesting aside (somewhat) related to this topic. I received a
survey request from dotmac the other day. I filled it out as I always
do, used to work in survey research and can't not do it now...
They asked some very pointed questions about the value of the various
pieces available to dotmac subscribers and what I thought brought the
most value out of the gamut of things available. They even asked the
respondents to 'spend' $100 across the various things available to ID
what the value points are and how much we are willing to 'pay' for
each piece.
I'd say that's another strong indicator that they are closely
evaluating the service, though to me it looks more like a business
strategy for determining where to downsize rather than what else they
can do.
