How Envision should work

[Peterson, Bob]Bob Peterson - 06:01am May 26, 2004 PST

Personally, I can't see browsing the Web hands-free. My interest is more in picture sharing, not treating the Web's image collection as a slide show.

[Keep in mind that you could very easily create your own Web collection of images and point a copy of Envision at that copy. Just because Envision can load any URL and look for images doesn't mean you can't restrict it to just what you want to see. -Adam]

That means it's a downside that Envision requires 10.2.8. Older Macs, which are the best candidates for merely displaying pictures, will be excluded.

[I tend to agree that older Macs are most likely to be pressed into service here, and although Mac OS 9 may be too hard to get back to, 10.2.8 should work on all Macs that can run Mac OS X (such as the Wallstreets or old iBooks), which isn't true of 10.3. -Adam]

I'd like software with functionality like a Ceiva, without the subscription fee. The Ceiva is otherwise just right.

[Both of my sets of grandparents have Ceiva digital picture frames, and although we love what the Ceivas provide, we hate, absolutely hate, using the Ceiva Web interface. An old PowerBook could make a way bigger, better, and esaier picture frame, though I'd like to see Envision work with the Mac OS X screen saver rather than do the slideshows itself in that case. -Adam]

Re: How Envision should work

Thanks for your thoughts on Envision. Some thoughts on your thoughts:

I think our positioning still needs work. When we say "a new way to experience the Web" we really mean "experience," not "browse." The Web should come to you, in the same (or better) way a piece of artwork does in your living room.

So many people have so many interests all around Envision. Here's hoping we're close enough for enough of them :) Or they get us there.

We thought about an OS 9 version, but that's just a dead end at this point. As Adam said, any Mac from the past 5+ years can run 10.2.8. We make sure to test on the low end.

The 1.0 release of Envision should be highly AppleScriptable, so it shouldn't be hard to do Cieva-like things.

Adam said he'd like to see Envision work with the Mac OS X screen saver rather than do the slideshows itself. This functionality (and more!) is now working here and planned for the final release. In fact anyone who wants our newest beta release, with this functionality in it, please just email us. It's way cool to see Mars panoramas as your screen saver, or changing views of Earth as your desktop picture.

And please keep those cards and letters coming!
